Great Garden Books

I think most gardeners are also book collectors of sorts.I know I’m a sucker for a great photo, and I don’t believe I’m alone. The garden book that tends to stand out is usually filled with glorious pictures, however the best books on gardening are also well written and filled knowledgable information. Equally important are the purely informational resource books that provide all the ‘nitty grittys’ of gardening and plant facts.

Sensible Gardening and Living

I probably have way too many gardening books, but they do get read over and over again, each time giving out some different information or insight than the time before. Below are a few top gardening books that I enjoy every time I pick them up.

Ornamental Grasses by Better Homes and Gardens

I use a lot of grasses in my garden and always find this gardening book to be helpful. There is general information on grasses, grass design ideas and management and growing tips. What I find most useful though is the index of ornamental grasses. They give a very extensive listing of all different types of ornamental grasses with a full description, picture, growing needs and hardiness of each type.

A very informative book for northern gardeners. I garden in zone 5 and this book is great for me as well as those who garden right into zone 2. This book gives a full detailed account of perennials from A to Z. Each plant is broken down into its varieties that have proven worthy of the northern climate. Barbara gardens in the northern part of British Columbia and the info in her book is from her own time tested experiences. Each perennial is also photographed.  This is one of the best gardening books for northern gardening that I have come across and makes for great reference material.

Shocking Beauty by Thomas Hobbs

This is a real picture book, great for curling up with on a cold day. Thomas Hobbs is a well known garden and floral designer as well as proprietor of Southlands Nursery. His combinations of plant material are quite outstanding and original. Many of the plants featured in his designs are not suitable for my zone 5 garden, but this book never fails to inspire me and get my creative juices flowing. Lots of beautiful photography in this one.
