When it comes to deer, nothing is totally sacred. I’m convinced a hungry deer will just about eat anything. Of course, they do have favorites and many plants are seldom if ever bothered by them.
Deer do not like fuzzy, prickly or bristly plants. Plants with soft hairy leaves or raspy leaves are not a favorite. Some of my favourite plants that fall into this category are:
Deer also tend to avoid those plants which have a strong aroma or are highly fragrant. The heavy scent tends to mask other smells and makes them feel uneasy. Great plants that fit this description are:
Plants that have leaves or stems that contain a milky sap are also avoided by deer. Many of these plants are caustic and deer seem to instinctively know this. Same goes for many toxic plants which are high in tannins. The bitter taste alerts the deer. All of the Euphorbias fall into this category.
